Oak Floor Sanding and Restoration in Huddersfield

This oak floor restoration in Huddersfield took a floor that was still in good structural condition, but years of use had left the surface scratched and marked. More noticeably, the existing finish had developed a strong orange tone that was hiding much of the oak’s natural colour and grain.

Rather than replacing a perfectly serviceable timber floor, the aim was to sand it back carefully and create a cleaner, more natural-looking finish while retaining the character of the original oak.

Removing the Old Orange Finish

The first stage was a full restoration sand using our Lagler Hummel belt sander. This allowed us to remove the old coating along with the surface scratches and imperfections that had accumulated over time.

As the old finish came away, there was an immediate change. The heavy orange colouring disappeared and the lighter, more varied tones of the oak became visible again.

We use professional sanding equipment with Festool dust extraction to keep airborne dust to a minimum and make the process considerably cleaner inside the home.

Refining the Oak Floor

Removing the old coating is only part of a good floor restoration.

After the initial sanding stages, we used our Hypergrinder i4 Wood planetary sanding system to refine the timber. This helps remove sanding marks and produces a more consistent surface across the floor, including the open-plan areas where differences in the finish would be particularly noticeable.

Careful preparation at this stage is important because once a clear finish is applied, imperfections in the sanding can become much easier to see.

A Natural Finish – Without Staining the Oak

Once we’d reached clean timber, there was no need to introduce a stain. The oak already had plenty of natural variation, grain and character of its own.

We applied a Berger-Seidle water-based primer, followed by Berger Seidle Greenstar 2K Lacquer in Satin.

The water-based system allowed us to protect the timber without bringing back the strong orange appearance of the previous coating. The satin sheen gives the floor a smart, understated finish while the 2K lacquer provides the durability needed for everyday use.

The Finished Oak Floor

The transformation wasn’t about making an old floor look artificially new. It was about revealing what was already there.

With the old coating removed, the individual boards, knots and natural variation in the oak are much clearer. The whole floor now has a lighter, cleaner appearance that works particularly well in the bright, open-plan living space.

Most importantly, the existing floor could be restored rather than replaced, preserving the timber while giving it a completely different appearance.
