Which Wood Floors Can Be Stained?
Most solid wood floors can be successfully stained, though every timber species takes colour differently. We regularly stain oak, pine, hardwood strip flooring, and engineered oak with a suitable wear layer. Parquet flooring can also be stained, though it needs careful, even application because the grain runs in multiple directions.
Repaired areas and replacement boards can accept stain slightly differently to the surrounding floor, which is exactly why we always test colour on your own floor before committing to the full room.

Berger Seidle ExpressStain Colour gives us access to a wide range of stock shades, from natural enhancers through to deep, dramatic tones. Because we can also mix bespoke colours on site, you’re not limited to a fixed swatch card.

We always recommend testing your chosen colour on an inconspicuous area or offcut first, since the same stain can look noticeably different depending on the species, grain and condition of your particular floor.
The Staining Process
- Full sand to bare wood — staining only works on clean, bare timber, so this is always step one
- Colour sample and confirmation — a test patch is applied so you can see the true result on your own floor before committing
- Stain application — applied evenly by hand or machine depending on the area and product, working with the grain
- Drying time — stains need to dry fully before any topcoat is applied
- Protective topcoat — a lacquer finish is applied over the stain as standard to protect it and lock in the colour long-term; a 2K oil finish is available instead if you’d prefer

Our standard approach is to stain the floor to your chosen colour, then apply a protective topcoat using Berger Seidle EcoGold Lacquer — a hard-wearing, long-lasting finish that suits most homes.
If you’d prefer an oiled finish instead, we also offer 2K oils in a range of colours. These soak into the wood rather than sitting on top, giving a slightly different look, feel and maintenance routine.
